What is it?

Insight is a new file system currently in development. It aims to revolutionise the way everybody thinks about files.

But files are files… right?

People tend to think about some objects (like files) based on information about them rather than names. Take photos, for example. You might choose to organise them by:

• the date they were taken
• the location of the photo
• a specific trip you were on
• individual people in the photo

Wouldn't it be great if you could organise your photos in all of these ways at once, then choose exactly how you see them based on what you're looking for?

• You want to find a hilarious picture of Bob pulling silly faces earlier this year
• You need to quickly see pictures of the coast, to try to find that beautiful sunset so you can show a friend
• You decide to make a collection of embarrassing photos of the football team when they've been out drinking

All these things (and more) are possible with Insight.

Insight is still under development at the moment and no public prototype exists, but there will be regular updates on the author's blog. If you don't fancy that, the final report is available to give you a taste of what the project is about.
